Anne Main has warmly welcomed the announcement of a £438,000 fund to improve and maintain St Albans Cathedral. The Abbey is one of 22 cathedrals to be awarded the grant by the First World War Centenary Cathedral Repair Fund after it was announced in the Budget 2014.
The fund was set up in April this year in recognition of the powerful symbol cathedrals are of Britain’s shared history as well as the significant role they will play when the nation comes together to commemorate the centenary of the First World War.
Anne said she welcomes ‘the Government’s contribution towards the Cathedral. The Abbey is a wonderful structure, and a cultural focal point of the city.
‘I’m glad the minister and the Fund have recognised the need to contribute towards the Cathedral which will preserve the rich historic fabric of the city, and make improvements to the memorial window and the great entrance.
‘This Cathedral’s grant is the third largest amount in the first round of funding allocations and I warmly welcome the commitment to ensure the preservation of such an important building.’
This was the first round of funding allocations and will be followed by two more. The next round will close in September 2014 with the final round closing in January 2015.
