Anne Main MP has written to communities secretary Sajid Javid and the St Albans council, following the tragic events at Grenfell Tower in west London.
The St Albans MP has called for the local council to review the ‘standards that are used in the district to ensure that the health and safety of tenanted properties are properly maintained and meet the necessary criteria’.
Mrs Main also called on Mr Javid to clarify the policies surrounding the health and safety of tenanted buildings, and what statutory duties must be met in order to provide these standards in housing.
‘The fire at Grenfell Tower is one of unimaginable horror, and my deepest condolences are with the victims and their families,’ said Anne.
‘When tragedies like this unfold we must act to quickly learn our lessons. I’ve asked questions of government and our local authority to provide clarity and reassurance.
‘It is important that we wait for the outcome of the public inquiry to establish the actual causes of the fire in west London, but there are already questions about safety standards, particularly in relation to retrofitting on some older buildings.
‘Since the tragic events of last week, I have had constituents contacting me trying to understand how this could happen, and seeking reassurances. I hope both government and the local authority will be able to provide that message.
‘The public inquiry is the right thing to do. The complexity and seriousness of last week’s fire has to be properly understood so it can be properly addressed in the future.’
